Kalighat Temple
We began our
journey seeking the blessings of goddess Kali. Lying on the old course of
River Hooghly, it is, The Kalighat temple, is considered as one of the popular Kali temples in India and
among the popular places to visit as part of Kolkata Tour.
Dedicated to Goddess Kali, Kalighat Kali Temple
is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the country. As per mythology, on learning about the death
of Sati by self-immolation, Shiva was blinded in rage and started the Tandav
Nritya (Dance of
Destruction). To prevent the world from eminent destruction, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut the corpse of
Sati into 51 pieces, which fell in various places of the Indian
subcontinent. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of the right
foot of Dakshayani or Sati fell.
It was a new moon day, so was considered auspicious. There was a huge crowd waiting to get a glimpse of the goddess. Amidst the chaos, we made it and were truly blessed.
